History
Tides of the Apocalypse started as a class-based d20 system created in about 2 months called SPLATLANDS, which took inspiration from tabletop games like Dungeons and Dragons for basic stats, class role types, and combat resolution, and GURPS for its robust character creation. Computer RPG’s such as the Fallout series served as inspirations, along with the Splatoon series for the marine post-apocalypse.
SPLATLANDS was a functional game, but it was restrictive with its class-based system, so I tried instead to make the roles more open by using gear abilities to allow a player to determine a “class” based on mix-and-match abilities and weapons. This greatly increased the player expression available while still allowing for classes and structures to be built over time and to be easily adaptable to different situations, giving birth to Tides of the Apocalypse.
Features
Tides of the Apocalypse features in the base game the following:
– Character creation that is quick and simple, but allows for deep roleplay potential with connections to the world and to the other player characters
– 20+ gear abilities, which can be stacked or can affect how other abilities interact
– 30+ weapons to wield with unique properties that can be optionally flavored with durability for jamming or breaking for a more hardcore post-apocalypse
– A simple guide for both players and game masters to start playing quickly and with confidence
